Designing an Attention Grabbing and Unique Website

February 3, 2010

One of the most critical things to factor in when designing a website is its uniqueness to stand out among the millions and millions of websites on the cyberspace. While you might have millions of people visiting your website every day, it will be of no use if they click in and click out in a matter of seconds. There is no shortcut really — you have to engage your audience while at the same time be able to pass your message across in an informative and interactive manner.

In web designing, quality is always more important than quantity– that is something that you have to always keep in mind. Take for instance animation — this is one thing that can determine the success, or the failure thereof of your site. A good animation used on a site should compliment and not complicate the site. It has to be relevant and in line with the rest of the site and should stipulate its purpose clearly well. In other words, animations have to be at par with the rest of the site to work together and help attain the main goals of the site.

If you can be able to effectively use animations to convey your message across, well and good, but if you cannot, avoid them. Photographs too are great in a website as their quality can equally make or break your site. You should not however have very many photos because remember the golden rule – quality is more important than quantity. There are some niches where all websites tend to look the same and feature the same website design. While at times it can be good to kowtow with the ‘trend’, you shouldn’t indulge yourself too much.

A little indulgence will help show and identify your site amongst its visitors, remember they too are able to recognize a trend in a particular niche. However, it is always good to be original to some extent. You would want to be unique and grab the full attention of your target audience. Logically, you will gain no benefit when you are just like that site of your competitor — you need to have an advantage over your competition, you ought to be different.

Majority of webmasters are however afraid to be too radical but it shouldn’t be a bad thing as long as you manage to pull it off effectively and successfully. Your target audience however has a very critical role to play here — you wouldn’t want to have an extremely flashy site if you target the elderly for instance. Simply put, ensure you get the equilibrium right. A site is not for a designer to conduct experiment with but it is for the target audience — the visitors.

The layout and color equally have a role of being striking enough to catch the attention of the target audience. You can always visit different websites, especially those on the niche that you are targeting, to look for inspiration. However, you shouldn’t copy them. Just use them to come up with your own original ideas. You therefore have to think who your main visitors will be, and what is most likely to attract them. This should be the basis of your design.
